What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s a structured form of therapy that helps people heal from the emotional distress caused by traumatic or upsetting experiences.

Rather than talking in detail about what happened, EMDR focuses on helping your brain reprocess those memories in a way that reduces their emotional intensity. During a session, you’ll recall a specific memory while engaging in rhythmic eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation (like tapping or sounds). This process helps the brain “unstick” painful memories and store them in a more manageable way.

EMDR is a well-researched, evidence-based therapy recommended by organisations like the World Health Organization and NICE (UK). It’s especially effective for PTSD, but it can also help with anxiety, grief, phobias, and low self-esteem. You remain in control throughout the process, and we go at a pace that feels safe for you.

Who is EMDR suitable for?

EMDR is suitable for people who have experienced distressing events or emotional difficulties that continue to affect their life. This includes:

  • PTSD and complex trauma
  • Childhood abuse or neglect
  • Anxiety, panic attacks, or phobias
  • Grief and loss
  • Low self-esteem or negative self-beliefs
  • Difficult relationships or attachment issues
  • Medical trauma or accidents

You don’t need a formal diagnosis to benefit from EMDR. If past experiences still feel “stuck” — emotionally, physically, or mentally — EMDR may help you process and move forward. We’ll talk together about whether EMDR is a good fit for you during your initial consultation.

Is this the right therapy for me?

Free initial consultation

I offer a free, no-obligation 15-minute phone or video consultation. This is a gentle first step where we can talk about what you’re looking for, explore the options available, and see whether working together feels right for you.

There’s no pressure or expectation — you can ask questions and make an informed choice at your own pace.

How many sessions do I need?

A guideline range is 6 to 12 sessions, but it depends Everyone’s experience of trauma is different, so the number of sessions required can vary. Some people start to notice changes after just a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support.

In our first meeting, we’ll talk about your goals and history, and I will propose how your therapy should proceed. You’re always in control of the pace — and there’s no commitment to a fixed number of sessions.

What happens in a session?

In our first session, we’ll talk about what’s brought you to therapy, your goals, and any relevant background. I’ll explain how EMDR works and answer any questions you have. This helps us build a sense of trust and safety before beginning any processing work. Once we’re ready to begin EMDR, sessions usually follow a structured format: We identify a memory or issue to focus on You bring that memory to mind while engaging in bilateral stimulation (like eye movements, tapping, or sounds) You simply notice what comes up — thoughts, emotions, or sensations — without needing to analyse or explain them We pause regularly to check in and ensure you feel grounded and safe The goal isn’t to forget what happened, but to change how it affects you now. Over time, the memory loses its emotional charge and becomes easier to live with. You’re always in control of the pace, and we work together to make the process feel manageable and respectful of where you are.

How much does it cost?

Session fees vary depending on the type and length of therapy. I’ll be happy to provide full details when you get in touch. If you’re unsure about whether therapy is right for you, I offer an initial consultation where we can talk through your needs, answer any questions, and see whether we’re a good fit to work together.

Concessions or reduced-rate spaces may be available in some cases — please feel free to ask.

Where are you based? Can I do sessions online?

I primarily offer online therapy sessions. These are conducted securely via video call. This allows you to attend therapy from anywhere that feels safe and convenient — whether that’s your home, office, or another quiet space.

Face-to-face consultations may be possible in Sheffield or Northampton. Availability will need to be discussed during our initial consultation.

All options offer the same level of care, confidentiality, and professionalism. I’ll work with you to find the best fit to support you throughout your journey.
